The best free one right now is www.rubiesofeventide.com.
It's actually got 3d graphics and a great environment for gaming. Plus, since it's free, you can make as many free accounts as you like.
Of course if you want to pay, you can.. and get a free teleport ring and some other magical items. But it's optional.
I play it pretty regularly after I tried out runescape.. which was so ridiculous I couldn't understand why anyone even played it.

You should check out Final Fantasy XI or World of Warcraft. Both easily found with a google search.
