I found out in band what it ment today and this guy goes " of what" and my band teacher answered with what the answer is.. We had a good laugh...

Commencement is what high schools and colleges call graduation, because the students are commencing, or beginning, their adult llives. Instead of it being an ending kind of thing, it's really a celebration of everybody's new beginnings.

to commence simply means to begin or to start.

example, "Now that we have a quorum, our meeting can now commence.

The term "commencement" typically IS associated with gradution, however.
