In Kansas traffic circles are starting to pop up all over the place and I hear nothing but complaints about them. I have even seen a multitude of complaints on here in discussions about England. If Americans would learn to use them, ie use turn signals to exit, then I think they would appreciate them.

Think about it, a four way stop means you have to come to a complete stop. This means that any momentum you build up is completely lost. With a traffic circle you can immediately enter if you time it correctly and exit without ever stopping. On some traffic circles I can do it without ever braking.

Brakes only waste gas. When you use your brakes you are wasting gas. A traffic circle is a gas saver.

Yes, if people would turn on the turn signal to exit then the next person would know that they could enter the roundabout. Otherwise you have to wait and see if they exit.

i think people hate them because very few people use them properly so it results in frustration. I have had many time when some stupid person in front of me will stop in the circle or something else stupid.

I'm originally from the UK, where there are lots. I really like them in light traffic flow because you can take them quite fast and just merge into the traffic stream, especially where there's good visibility along the other roads so you can take them even faster. Which is a) fun and b) saves fuel and time by not stopping. As others said, you don't get bad T-bone and head-on collisions so they are safer. In heavy traffic flow they can jam up with traffic all from one road, so in the UK some have had traffic lights retrofitted onto the roundabout itself. Those could possibly be active only at rush hour. I'm not so keen on the newer mini-roundabouts, but they were a good choice in the UK to serve the same function as a 4-way stop upgraded from an unmarked intersection - everyone there knows the rules for roundabouts, but not 4-ways. They aren't so safe, at least in principle - an inattentive driver could come right across the top at high speed. I don't have any statistics.

I moved from the U.S. to the UK a few years ago. I haven't needed or been able to afford a car so I haven't had to learn to cope with roundabouts. After petrol prices and road tax, they're the greatest deterrent towards my changing that situation.

I'm not used to them. Roundabouts are confusing and (seemingly) chaotic. If I had grown up with them it probably wouldn't be a problem. As it is, I find them mind-boggling.

Are you supposed to use turn signals though? You wouldn't know from the folks around here. ;-)

I do not like them because they seem to be filled with the same people that do not grasp the concept of right on red and what to do at a four way stop....

Maybe I just need to get used to them. I never thought of them as something that could prevent stop signs, if that's the case I like them better already.

I didn't know I hated roundabouts. I didn't get the memo telling me I hated them. Thanks for letting me know I hate something.
