You can overcome lack of experience. Here are some ways:

1) Demonstrate you are familiar w/ the product line (i.e. target market/demographic, what makes each brand distinctive, price ranges, etc.)

2) Create a before & after portfolio of photos w/ before & afters for a casual look, a business/interview look & a glamor/evening look.

3) Be ready to explain why you really want the job & what sets you apart from other applicants. For example:

* Do you want to pursue a career in sales, retail, or cosmetology?

* Do you have previous related experience? (i.e. makeup for theatre) or volunteer work/paid jobs that demonstrate your maturity & ability to commit?

* Do you have references? (i.e. teachers, previous supervisors, people you've babysat for or helped)

Good luck!

I have worked in the past at several different cosmetics counters- Clarins, Clinique, Arden.

Sales experience is very important - if you don't have it fake it! The most important thing that these companies are looking for is that you can SELL SELL SELL. Second, how you present yourself is important (professional, sophisticated, BUBBLY.) All the color knowledge is not as important believe it or not. That they can teach you but what they look for the most is an assertive people person that is not afraid or intimidated to approach people, get them into the cosmetic chair and start applying and "romancing" the products. If you can sell yourself to them they may hire without experience. It can be a fun job but is not as easy as it seems. There is a lot of sales pressure and long hours on your feet. If you don't mind all that then go for it. If you don't get hired first time, try again. I had 3 interviews before I was hired on my first cosmetics counter job!
Good Luck hope that helps =)

Try this...fill out an application and when you are going to hand it in, see if you can see or set up a meeting with the person in charge of hiring, or the manager. If you have no experience, chances are they are going to dismiss your application right away. But, if you get a chance to discuss with them that you have a passion for cosmetics and show them how knowledgeable you are- you might get your foot in the door.

Hi Pook

Believe in yourself and send out your introduction letter and maybe go into a department store and speak to them and see what they say. Being passionate helps a lot. There is a job out there with your name on it. We all have to start from somewhere and I am sure that your mom can advise you on the best way to go.
Go for it.

I am not sure about a department store I think they will train you to do any job...I know for a fact that you can sell Mary Kay as long as you are 18 or older. Mary Kay trains you fully.

I think they will train you if you were hired.
