AMDA is a joke. You will not be taken seriously You will not get a quality education in Theater at AMDA. If you want to "get started" go to a quality acting school.
Juillard is excellent and looks great on a resume
HB Studio (they trained many actors that are now famous).
CatherineGaffigan (decent classes) CatherineGaffigan.com
The Actors Studio, where many top actors studied, DeNiro and others.
You also must consider how much you can afford to spend for actor training in NYC.
Actors Connection: if you want to meet and audition, in front of Casting Directors and Talent Agents and Soap Opera Casting Directors.

I go to AMDA -LA. Truth? You'll get out of school what you put into it. There is a lot of work-but also a lot of really good teachers that will invest a lot in you. And when it comes down to it, an actors education doesn't matter a whole lot. Successful actors have any educational background from dropping out of high school to Julliard.
I do joke and call AMDA "scamda" because they have national scholarships-($2,500-10,000) that they give to everyone- so the applicants think, "wow, they must think i have something if they are going to give me money!" and when really all they want is your money.
Far as acting conservatories in the US-it's not bad. (I think AADA-the american academy of dramatic arts is going out of business...)
If you have any questions about the curriculim or anything, i'd be happy to help you out.

From what I know, it's legit. A degree is a respectable thing in it's self. I don't know of anyone or agency that looks down upon it or doesn't regard it as it should. Try doing some research on it. Good luck!

There are probably people who think both ways in the business, but I've never heard of anyone who didn't respect an actual degree (if it's from a decent school)
Get a real degree, it will help you more in the long run.

As far as I know, it is. My friend Deena went there, but she did get her four-year degree first. She then went on to tour with children's theatre companies quite successfully.
