For research go to AAA or your insurance company if they have travel assistance.
We haven't gone from the the Mid-West to Seattle but we have gone from Michigan to the Southwest by various routes that included mountain travel. The mountains roads are well designed with plenty of protection to prevent going off the mountain road. The only thing that was scary was going down hill so make sure you have a good set of brakes. There are runoffs at the end of the hill, but still is a little unsettling if you have never traveled mountain roads Other than other drivers the real danger are falling rocks. we've seen a few car hit by them but nothing serious. Just drive carefully.
Happy traveling and enjoy the views but not if you are driving.

My cousins live in Seattle and the trip is wonderful. Very scenic and the mountains are not bad. I would only be concerned in the winter months going over the mountains. I would purchase a atlas for truck drivers because these have fueling stops and other helpful information in them more than regular atlas'.

It will be an awesome, picturesque drive if done in the day time. Just make sure to stop at some look-outs along the way for a great photo op. Don't be concerned, it will be a cake-walk.

From me! Avoid I-90 if you want to see beauty. Take hi way #2 from Spokane & travel to GRAND COULEE. Plan to spend AT LEAST one night in Grand coulee. Here at the GRAND COULEE DAM you can take in the LAZER LIGHT SHOW from either above, kind of a" lovers lane" or down at the park just off the base of the dam. "Up above" gives the best view of the lazer light show as it SPANS THE ENTIRE WIDTH of the dam!!!! At night time at the base of the dam, creates a natural phenomena of sorts, as the water from the spill ways seems to move in SLOW MOTION as it descends. There is also an "atmospheric" condition of sorts one can feel in the air, hard to explain but it's there! Leaving the COULEE take 174 to Pateros then 153 to Twisp. From Twisp take hiway #20, the North Cascade scenic hiway for a super trip! Yo'll travel thru Winthrop(old west town!!!) see Ross lake & to many other wonders to beautiful to beleive it! Contact the dept.of parks & recreation Wa state for info! You'll exit on I-5 which you can take south to Seattle. Beleive me, DON'T miss this one!

Since you are traveling in the summer, there is nothing to worry about except maybe road construction. :) If you're in the zone, you may not even notice you've cross over them. It's just like any other stretch of freeway, only it goes up a really big hill.
