The Koi in my pond seem to eat in two different ways. Some are known for staying on top of the water and eating several pellets at once. Others simply come up to grab one, and then return to the bottom and end up repeating this motion. Recently I heard this difference is explained by one type being males, and the other being females. I haven't been able to find anything on this anywhere on the internet, but it would be nice to know if it's true, and if so, which sex is which.

Eating habits aren't a reliable way to sex Koi. Different one's just prefer a different style of feeding. I would say some are more greedy than the others basically.

This has nothing to do with gender. It has to do with how comfortable they are with your presence and how hungry they are. If you set up a video for a few days so they got used to it and then fed them and walked quickly away you would find more coming to the surface more often and staying longer when you reviewed the video. You are significantly larger than they are and they aren't really comfortable exposing themselves which is what they have to do when grabbing floating pellets.

Magicman is right, eating habit of koi does differs. If you note, even eating habit of goldfish differs from one to another. Strange, both belongs to the same family :-)
