Yes I am aware of the past mainly their staunch support of the USSR, but considering Cuba is sputtering Economically Castro is set to die in a couple of years wouldn't be time for the US to start making an influence in Cuba. The reason China did not become like Cuba was because we became involved with them and started to develop influence. With the government and its people.

Yes the CMC was 45 years old, also the regime is begining to fall apart and I think right now is the best time to start change. Waiting until it is over isn't going to help.

NO!!! Why on earth would we do that? Castro is a corrupt leader and has been abusing powers since he started. Once Castro is gone...it is a possiblity

I don't think the US should lift the embargo just because Fidel resigned, Raul (his brother) will continue the same dictatorship, The embargo should be lifted if the government of cuba, free the political prisoners, let cubans go the all facilities, including hotels, beaches etc, that now are only available for turists, call for democratic elections, with more than one political party, etc etc etc, is not so easy, Fidel resignation doesn't mean that cuba will change tomorrow, I agree that the embargo it's been helping fidel with an excuse against the US, just in case you don't know Cuba has been bying a lot of products from the US in the past years. I think they have to wait a little bit, see what raul has to offer, And for those that think that Cuba's been living great for all these years... Why didn't you move there?? to live the great cuban dream?? mmmm, and the ones that think that in the US they have a dictator now,,,, why don't you try living under the same regime for 49 years???

Of course the U.S. should lift the embargo with
Cuba because it shouldn't be in place at all.
the embargo was imposed for political reason
alone from the Cuban American who are mostly
Republicans...it's all about VOTES & power.
Cuba did nothing wrong against the U.S. and the embargo is hurting no body but the Cuban people
and the American farmers who lose a lot of business to the Europeans & the Canadians.

Dear god yes! Who are we to dictate the internal affairs of other nations? It never should have happened in the first place. The general idea was that the US didn't want Cuba to be used by The Soviet Union to effect first-strike tactics in a nuclear engagement. The idea was kind of silly when there were already so many ways to deliver a nuclear payload in a first-strike scenario. The are horrible occurrences in China on a daily basis and we trade with them. The major reason people leave Cuba is that the US has kept them unable to support themselves.

Yes, because it hasn't done us any good, and it hasn't toppled the Castro regime. If you give someone medicine, and after two weeks the patient isn't getting any better, you don't give the medicine another two weeks to work, you find a better medicine. The embargo failed, and you can realize that while still admitting that Castro is a tyrant who deserves America's opposition -- but not to the point of madness, the way some bozos in South Florida and elsewhere have gone.

This would be the worst time to lift the embargo for the very reasons you mention. When Castro is gone will be the time Cubans regain control of their government and their lives... supporting their regime now would carry on this nonsense for anther generation

I understand all the arguments against Castro and the communists, but what about creating a new market for our own industries? Agriculture alone could greatly benefit from being able to sell to Cubans.

Um..We did nothing to help out China. We did everything, along with the UK, to help out Hong Kong, which until 2000 was a British Territory. China is fast growing, now, thanks in large part to the past 7 years of income flowing out of Hong Kong. As far as helping Cuba, outside of cigars and shirts-what do they have to offer? Wal-Mart and Coke, at best, could outsource about 20k jobs there.
The biggest reason we went against Cuba in the first place is because they pointed missles in our direction (or to say the least, the threat was there), and unlike other countries around the globe-Cuba is REAL close. If I point a gun in your face today, will you give me a job 10 years from now?

When Castro is dead we'll think about it. China was smart enough to understand that a capitalist economy was the way to wealth. It was to their benefit not ours.
And to Cheryl M, if all the Cubans wanted that government why are we still getting them washing up on our shores daily.

It is long past due. The cold war has been over for ever. Castro can't even pee without help. I think they would welcome us with open arms and we could probably take them over pretty quickly and hold onto them like we do Puerto Rico. It would be a good idea.
