4 1/10 - 1 14/15
convert to improper fractions = 41/10 - 29/15
using lcm = 30 = (123 - 58)/30
simplify = 65/30
= 2 5/30
= 2 1/6

I do not know what you are 'doing wrong'.

a quick way is to rewrite the numbers:
4 1/10 = 41/10 (40 tenths plus one tenth)
1 14/15 = 29/15 (15 fifteenths + 14 fifteenths)

Now you have 41/10 - 29/15.

Finding the LCM helps to make calculations easier. However you can find any common multiple.

30 certainly is a common multiple (and it happens to be the LCM).
1/10 = 3/30
1/15 = 2/30

therefore
41/10 = 123/30
29/15 = 58/30

Your problem is now written:
123/30 - 58/30 = 65/30 = 2 5/30 = 2 1/6

(you can add or subtract the numerators once you have everything over the same denominator)

---

oops, I added instead of subtracting
-----

To find the LCM, you find the factors of each denominator:
10 = 2*5
15 = 3*5
For each different factor, take the higher number of them (here, it is only one of each)

2*3*5 = 30

-----

You could have done the problem with any multiple (it does not have to be the LCM)

for example 10*15 = 150
150 is a common multiple of 10 and 15.
1/10 = 15/150
1/15 = 10/150

41/10 = 615/150
29/15 = 290/150

difference is 325/150 = 2 25/150 = 2 5/30 = 2 1/6.
---

We could have solved the problem using 60, 120 or any other common multiple (including 6300 if you really wanted to).

The real trick is to bring all fractions to the same common denominator

Step 1 - Convert the mixed fractions to simple fractions:

4 1/10 = 41/10
1 14/15 = 29/15

Step 2 - Find the LCM for the denominator

10 = 5x2
15 = 5x3
LCM = 5x2x3 = 30

Step 3 - Restate each simple fraction in terms of the LCM

41/10 = 123/30
29/15 = 58/30

Step 4 - Do the math

123/30 - 58/30 = 65/30

Step 5 - Convert the simple fraction to a mixed fraction

65/30 = 2 5/30

Step 6 - Reduce the fraction to simplest form

2 5/30 = 2 1/6

The answer is 2 1/6

If the fractions are 1/10 and 14/15, then this problem is solved in two steps.

The first step is to turn everything into a fraction. 4 and 1/10 is actually the fraction 41/10. 1 and 14/15 is 29/15. The formula is:

A and C/D = (A*D+C)/D

The next step involves subtracting two fractions. The formula here is:

A/B - C/D = (A*D - B*C)/B*D

41/10 - 29/15 = (14*15 - 10*29)/10*15 = (615-290)/150 = 325/150

325/150 can be simplified. Divide 315 by 150 to get the whole number. Then multiply the fraction by 150. This gives:

2 and 25/150

since 150 is divisible by 25, the fraction can be further simplified to 1/6 and the final answer is 2 and 1/6

Ok.
First: change the franction to a impropper number, that means the the one up is bigger than the one down:::: 4 1/10 multiply the 10 by the 4 and add the 1:::::41/10 right?
Then do the other one:::: 1 14/15, multiply the 15 by the 1 and add the 14:::::: 29/15 right?
Now find the LCM of 10 and 15::::: 30 right?

now = [(41*3)-(29*2))/30......=65/30::::: simplify and it goes like this
= 2 1/6, and that's it.

Hope this can help.

4 1/10 - 1 14/15
= 41/10 - 29/15
= 123/30 - 58/30
= 65/30
= 13/6
=2 1/6

4 1/10 = (4 x 10 + 1) / 10 = 41 / 10
1 14 / 15 = (1 x 15 + 14) / 15 = 29 / 15

now,
41 / 10 - 29 / 15
= (41 x 3 - 29 x 2) / 30
=65 / 30
= (2 x 30 + 5) / 30
= 2 5/30
= 2 1/6

LCM = 30, so you get

4 3/30 - 1 28/30

since 3/30 is greater than 28/30, borrow 30/30 from the 4:

3 33/30 - 1 28/30 = 2 5/30 = 2 1/6.

Indeed, LCM = 30, so you get

... 4 3/30 - 1 28/30

Because 3/30 < 28/30, borrow 30/30 from the 4:

... 3 33/30 - 1 28/30 = 2 5/30 = 2 1/6.
