a shortcut is exactly what it says, a shortcut. It is not the direct link to the program, its a round about way. If you delete the shortcut, then the program will be in the start menu.... it won't go anywhere... and yes, shortcuts have been known to slow things down a bit....

Clutter on the desktop uses a small amount of RAM but are not running. Deleting them is just that a shortcut is denoted by a small arrow on the icon at the bottom left and just points to a program. A non-shortcut may cause a problem if deleted so make sure it has the arrow.

What slows you down is programs running on the system tray (task bar usually next to the clock). These should be kept to a minimum as they are programs running using both CPU and RAM. If you are not using your messenger exit it dont just send it to the tray, If you dont use the programs on your system tray you should stop them from loading using their own configuration settings if possible.

You can disable programs loading on startup by clicking start/run
type "msconfig" and hit enter.
Removing check marks in the startup tab will stop the program from loading on future boots. replacing them will allow them to load again if you decide the program was needed.
This is a non-distructive way to speed up most computers with a little experimenting you can usually make a fair increase in speed

If it not true that having an icon to a program on your desktop will slow down your computer. Just becasue you have an icon to it does not make the program automatically run. Every single thing on your Start Menu is a desktop icon displayed as text rather then pictures. They do not automatically start programs or slow down your computer.

Deleting an icon does not affect the program itself in any way. It just makes it harder to start the program when you want to use it.

If having icons on your desktop bothers you, create a new folder on your desktop (called it something like "icons"), and then drag any icons you rarely or never use into that folder. You get them off the desktop, but still only have them one click away for use. Just double click the folder, and there are all the icons for you to use.

No. Not at all. You can delete shortcuts and it will have no effect on the program running or not. The items listed in your startup are what are run automatically - not what is on your desktop. To see the startup - Click - START - RUN - type in msconfig and press enter - the click Startup Tab - the items that have a check mark will be started at boot time. has absolutely nothing to do with whats on your desktop.

It is safe to delete only the ones with the little arrows in the bottom left corners of the icon, but when the dialog box appears, make sure you don't click delete program! That is if your running Windows XP!

Yes, it is true to an extent.
To delete the icon, right click on the mouse and a window will come up that says a bunch of stuff, towards the bottom, it will say "delete"....click on that and it will disappear from your desktop, but you'll still have it on your computer.
Hope this helps!

No, you can delete almost any icons on your desktop and not delete your programs. You can't delete my computer or the recycle bin. It will ask you if you want to delete the shortcut and tell you if you wish to delete the program to go to add/remove programs in control panel.

No, shortcuts are not always running and do not slow down your computer. They are simply links to the programs themselves.

You will not lose any programs by deleting the shortcuts.
