My husband and I have a list of names to choose from but we want to see and interact with the baby first before we name it. How long after its born do we have to name it or is it up to us when we name it?

Whatever you do, don't listen to Merrick, he doesn't even have any kids. He's a child, himself.

They usually want you to fill out the birth certificate paperwork while you and the baby are still in the hospital. I had a C-section and was there for 5 days, and even though my son had a name, we still procrastinated and took as long as we could...but that's just 'cause my husband and I are procrastinators. ;)

If you have a few names picked out and you spend some time with the baby, whatever name you call him or her will seem to fit soon enough.

Good luck!

I have heard of situations where the parents did not name a child for several weeks. It is generally assumed that names are picked out before the child is born (my doctor asked me what my son's name was 3 seconds after he was born - and I told her!). But this is not always the case. If you feel unsure about what to name your child, then tell them that when they present you with the paperwork at the hospital. They will let you know how to proceed from there.
I cannot see anyone forcing you to name your child before you are ready. Have a wonderful pregnancy/labour and best of luck in the future.

You'll have to name it before you leave the hospital at least. The birth certificate and all have to be done.

Until you are discharged from the hospital, they have to send off the birth certificate.
