You still have to pay them unless the parties agree to a different arrangement. Often they will 'buy out' the contract of the player or agree to different terms. But, it also happens where you have to pay the whole thing. Alan Houston was one of this past years highest paid players, but he wasn't on any team. The Blazers had to pay Sean Kemp's contract for years after he left the team. Larry Brown and the Knicks agreed to a buy out so the Knicks didn't have to pay him his full contract.

yes unless the player/coach deliberatly went against his contract, but that could be hard to prove.
