Most would say we entered the middle east during the early 1970's. Its is more likely we have had an interest and and been involved in the middle east since the second world war. The main reason may not have been oil as much as help Isreal control its neighbors. Europeans did not really take an interst in the middle east until about 1918. To answer your question though we have had a hand in trying to control the area since about 1945. I hope this helps. Good luck

Well, there were the Barbary Wars in the early 1800s. North Africa, rather than the 'Middle East,' but it was a conflict with a muslim culture that practiced piracy in the mediteranean at the time, so it could be considered the first conflict between the USA and the Ummah (the Muslim World - which is often what most english-speakers mean when they say 'the Middle East').
At the turn of the 19th century, the Barbary states would demand tribute of any nation that traded in the area, those that didn't pay (and, sometimes, those that did) were subject to piracy. The US fought the Barbary states twice rather than pay tribute. After the first Barbary War, the war of 1812 broke out, and, while the US was repelling a British invasion, and US vessels were being barred from the Mediteranean by the British, the Barbary pirates resumed thier former practices. The second Barbary War resulted in a safe passage treaty for US vessels. The Barbary states were eventually defeated and 'colonized' by the Eurpoean powers.

As you can see, early relations had favorable outcomes, but as the US changed it's interests, the outcomes became much more negative.
