Many women have bowel movements while pushing. It is completely normal. When you push a baby out, it is the same exact thing as pushing during a bowel movement. You use the same muscles and it pretty much feels the same. Trust me at the moment, you will be so caught up in the moment of pushing and the baby coming. Having a bowel movement will not be on your mind.

This is very normal and nothing to be embarassed about. The docotor and nurses told me prior to pushing that is was likely to happen and not to worry about it because it was indication that I was pushing correctly. Whatever you do, do no not deprive yourself or your baby of food before delivery, it is not good for either of you-you'll need all the energy you can get to give birth. My advice would be not try to avoid the bowel movement but accept it as a natural thing and just let it happen. You won't even notice it is happening you will be so involved with pushing your child out! Good luck to you.

Yes. I was so embarrassed during my first delivery until the doctor and nurse said it was normal and it's supposed to happen. If it does, it means you are pushing correctly. You really can't avoid it. I've heard of some women stop eating before they go to the hospital, but that doesn't mean there's not some still in there! Just don't worry about it. All they'll do is clean it up and tell you that you are doing a great job!

The dr's want you to have a bowel movement it means your pushing the right thing...but your body knows when baby will be comming and you will be having bowel movements before the pushing comes...I never had it but i did pee on the table- but you dont care much who sees you've got bigger things on your mind lol

I remember when i was pregnant all i could think of was omg how embarrasing it would be to poo on the table in front of my hubby...my mom says "oh your not gonna care" Well I can say you really wont care

It didnt happen to me or anyone I know, but I have heard of it before. I delivered with a midwife both times and during the pregnacy the midwifes told everyone what could and couldnt happen during birth. Bowel movements and vomiting are both normal, I dont think there is a way of preventing either it just depends on your body. I hope this helps.

You can have an enema but that won't guarantee you won't have a bowel movement on the table. And can cause other complications.

BTW this is a normal thing that happens ALL THE TIME. The nurses are used to it. It's natural. They wisk it away before you even know it's happened. And with everything else going on it's doubtful you will even realize you did.

Don't worry about it. It's no big deal.

Of all the babies I've helped deliver I'd say about 90% of them poop on the delivery table. We take it in stride, clean it up and often don't even tell the mom she did it. She's got enough to worry about and by then she often doesn't care, lol. In all actuality, it's how we know you're pushing correctly. It should just about feel like you're trying to push out a big bowel movement except it's a baby. :-)

It is perfectly normal. When you are pushing in labor, you push like you are trying to poop. Seriously! I had a BM with my first. It wasn't the first time the nurse had seen it and I guarantee it wasn't going to be the last time. You worry about it now, but trust me, when you are in labor you will have your mind on other things.

You may want to let whoever is in the delivery room with you know that it is a possibility. A friend of mine had no idea about it when I told her. She warned her husband about it before she went into labor. He was so grateful he knew beforehand because she had a BM while pushing and it didn't come as a surprise. One less unexpected event!

There is no way to avoid a bowl movement while pushing. Don't feel bad it happens, with all the pushing your doing; it's normal to have a bowl movement when pushing. but again, you cant prevent a bowl movement from happening

No it didn't happen with me, but it happened with a friend. Usually your body will start activating it's "natural" enema. That's what happened to me. I kept going and going before I realized I was in labor. By the time I actually got to the hospital I was already "cleaned" out. As far as taking an actual enema, i wouldn't bother, than you'd probably have more of a mess than if it actually came out. Besides, the nurses and doctors are trained professionals who've seen that happen many times before.
