Well, I know you're not. But you're obviously better at writing than talking. I can be the same way.
Try quotations. Is there a particular literary figure, scientist, philosopher that you are particularly drawn to? Look him up on a search engine along with the word "quotations" and find some good all purpose material that you could throw into any random conversation. Make sure you only quote those you know about so that if the quotation works, you can run with it. I don't know about everyone else but I'm thrilled to bits when some guy I'm talking to mentions or quotes Mark Twain, Neitzsche, Sartre etc.
You shouldn't be so worried about what other people think of your interests. Just put them out there and if they like you, they like you. If not,"poo to (them) with nobs on!"

You have to open up a little and talk. I am fairly shy as well, but can usually find a way to get involved in a conversation and from there you should be able to show your intelligence.

A wise man speaks few words, but actively listens.... just because you're shy does not make you seem less intelligent... find a common ground something you both can share together an interest and talk about that...besides shyness is a sweet quality to have.
