HP and Toshiba are both well established brands. Toshiba is generally regarded as producing the best quality laptops but you also pay a premium price for this. You might find that there is a HP machine that does everything you want and is better value for money. From a servicing point of view, I have found it difficult to get parts for Toshiba laptops where HP parts seem to be more readily available. When HP and Compaq merged, the HP laptops ("Omnibooks") were quietly phased out and HP adopted the better Compaq laptop technology. These were good quality machines and probably still are.

I had a Toshiba laptop.
Broke down on me 3 times and I had Virus and Spyware protection, with all of it up to date.
Previously, I owned a Sony (also given to me by my father!) and this worked superbly- it crashed once, but that time was my own fault entirely!
What I was most displeased was with Toshiba, was the appalling customer services I encountered the first time my machine went "KAPUT". I tried various phone numbers and was never put through to people. I tried navigating the site, and it took me half an hour before being referred to a User Forum, where you'd be helped out by random Toshiba Users...
All in all, I'm put off buying anything Toshiba ever again.

Toshiba is a good brand considering the variety of other brands there are out there. Nine times out of ten, if it's a japanese product, you can't go wrong. (I think it's Japanese. I could be wrong.)That goes for almost any consumer product in general. In regards to your laptop, I think the concern should be placed on what's causing your computer to crash rather than the overall quality of the computer. In instances where my computer begins to act funny, I of course check for viruses and also do a system restore. It's like having a brand new computer all over again. (But, do save your important data first.)

I have had 3 Toshiba Laptops and never had a problem with them. I sold them because I needed newer technology, that's all. I have read somewhere that the brand is among the more reliable ones and has good service.
The crashing is almost always caused by software. You might have spy-ware or free software installed or something.

As far as "who makes it" as hinted in some other answers, I think that is not especially a factor, as there are very intelligent and competent folks everywhere, and China has a hand in almost any computer you can buy. As far as Toshiba, Consumer Reports most recent report had it rated third after IBM and HP...
PC Mag has always rated Toshiba highly, as far as I know, along with IBM, HP, and Acer...
ComputerWorld, too...
I suspect you may have software problems! Problems with a *brand* of computer are usually shown in hardware problems. I got suspicious when my HP overheated twice this year, but the HP is under warranty, and so far, I've received excellent tech support from the company, so we'll see...
FYI, PC Mag rated IBM/Lenovo some 200 times as "sturdy" as any other brand, hardware-wise!

toshiba is a very good laptop I have had mine for two years and have not had it crash or have had any problems with it at all and I am using protool alot, which really likes to competely use up everything on your computer. My suggestion why it is crashing is because you don't defrag or just alot of programs that start with the computer or just too many programs that are slightfully harmful.

any brand can be good or bad, you need to see what hardware and software comes with it.
