It was Steve Sax. Had Gibson just hit a single and Sax won the game, it would not have been nearly as exciting. Gibson was plagued with injuries by this time, and he was on his way out as a Major Leaguer. Seeing Gibson win the game was much more dramatic than having the younger Sax do it.

Wasn't it Steve Sax? If I recall correctly, Mike Davis hit for the #8 spot. Gibson hit in the pitcher's spot.
