Yes it is, but the likes of Sharapova and in the past, Seles, have never been penalized for grunting. I guess the rules are not put into play as far as the top players are concerned -- e.g. Nadal's time-wasting on his first serve has never received anything more than a warning from the umpire. If these is how these players win tournaments, I don't see them are deserving winners.

Ask what Natalie Tauziat thinks!

Really, it became an issue a long time ago, that it's becoming abused by some. We've gone to the point where you can tell fake grunting from the natural kind. The tours should make some kind of violation or rule now.

If there is the whole profession is in deep trouble. There are rules for disturbance and interference in your opponents shot.

Noises such as cell phones ringing can cost you points, games and even matches in different tournaments and leagues.

Yelling watch out as your ball is in the air space of your opponents as they hit is definitely a no no. You are supposed to keep your vocal comments while the ball is on your air space.

I hear grunts and groans for the most powerful serves and the tiniest of drops. We are supposed to be good enough to block this all out.

They grunt to have more strength in hitting the ball, as well as to let out exhaustion. But it IS getting annoying. It's very distracting.

wimbledon has asked some players to tone it down a little, but i don't think anyone else has.

i do have a problem with the players basically yelling as they strike each ball, but requiring absolute silence as they play.

if the players are going to yell, the fans should be able to as well...

No, but it should be. Sharapova is really annoying to watch for this reason.
