i had a scan at under 6 weeks to check the pregnancy was inside the uterus. This was done because i was admitted to hospital due to pain, however it was related to my bowels and had no significance to the pregnany. Anyway everything was fine exceopt there being no heartbeat, the midwife said it was too early to see at this stage, but that they would re-scan in a 2 weeks just incase of blighted ovum or a missed miscarriage but that she wasnt really worried. I just wondered if anyone could give me any information on these, mainly i'd like to know if either of them occur do you continue to get pregnancy symptoms and for how long for? any information would be greatly appreciated as the doctor midwife did not give me much to go on.

Yes you could still have pregnancy symptoms with a blighted ovum. Basically a sac grows, but there's nothing in it and your body still thinks it's pregnant. Usually the body wises up by 12 weeks and causes a miscarriage (usually I say). Sometimes it doesn't and one needs a D & E or D & C. If there's something growing they should be able to see a heartbeat by 8-10 weeks along.

I had a blighted ovum and it basically means that there was a chromosomal error and that there never was a viable pregnancy. Some people also call it a "missed miscarriage". I wouldn't worry as long as your Dr. is not. Even at 6 weeks, I think your Dr. could tell if there was something to be concerned about. I know you'll feel much better once you see the heartbeat--Good luck!

blighted ovum may continue to give off pregnancy hormones even if there is no baby. Missed miscarrage generally doesn't give off hormones. the nurse is right, it too early to tell, so try to relax (easy to say, huh!!)
