why does my pink toed tarantula have 9 legs?

Tarantulas have eight regular legs for locomotion and two smaller 'legs' called pedipalps that are on either side of the fangs. They use those more when hunting and mating. Sounds like your tarantula is missing a leg or pedipalp if you only count nine. The front area above the fangs is rounded, is that possibly the short scooper looking thing you are looking at?

one of its pedipalps is missing,its like an extra set of hands, as if they need them.there used in mating and feeding ,good news is when it molts it will have regenerated. be patient.
