blue smoke =oil (maybe piston rings, valve stem oils seals etc)
black=fuel (diesel? injectors ect)
white= water (head gasket or worse)
if you've not used it for a while could just be water in exhaust
otherwise check your dipstick if its creamy ring the garage
i used to have an old diesel that smoked when i revved its nuts off, it cleared eventualy this was caused by doing short journeys and the engine coking up
could be a lot of things go to garage if ts bad

it depends on what kind of car u have actually in most cases its the valve stem seals leaking oil.. but it could be a cracked head too if it were a head gasket ud be hearing, seeing, and feeling a big difference in the way ur car runs and feels. most likely its the valve stem seals u can get an oil at the auto parts store that makes ur seals swell up which means they get bigger and itll stop leaking for a lil while but u should take it to a local mechanic and have them fix it or do it urself. if its black smoke it means ur burning gas which could be a variety of things causing that

This is could be one of the following problems. 1)You could need a tune up. 2)You could have bad valve seals. 3) Depending how old the car is and the mileages you may have bad piston rings. I would take the car to the auto shop and pay them a fee to find out why it is smoking it should only cost about $80-$125 dollars and they should give you a quote to repair the problem.

If it is smoke, there are several things it could be. The piston rings could be the problem. You could have a stuck/clogged pcv valve. It it's an auto, the modulator valve could be bad, letting it suck in trans fluid. If it has vacuum brakes, it could be a bad master cylinder. It could be a leaky gasket somewhere letting oil into the intake port.
If it is steam, then there are other things. It could be a leaking head gasket. Cracked head or cylinder wall. Or, it could be a leaky intake manifold gasket.

It's either the head gasket or the turbo. If it's the turbo you can get a used turbo from a breakers or on e-bay for around $200

Are you sure it's smoke? If it's white and dissipates quickly It's steam (blown head gasket) Black smoke, It's too much fuel in combustion chamber, Adjust fuel flow. If it's Gray smoke, you've got problems......Valve guides (1 or more)Needs rings....Too much wear in cylinders.... major overhaul

what colour is the smoke? if its white.. it most probably a head gasket problem. check your oil.. if it's a chocolately brown colour then i would stop driving the car and get it towed to the garage... same happened to me last week! cost £420 to fix. :S
