In the real world you have to be BORN to the job .. and everyone between you and the Throne has to die of (un)natural causes :-).

Historically you could lead a Revolution, claim to be the rightful heir (eg. pull a sword out of a stone) or otherwise get in by "dirty deeds". I'm going to bet they have a similar mechanism ...
