I have an external hard drive that I want to format so I can use it to run an older lap top that I cannot afford to upgrade or replace at this time. Can it be done, if so how?

The lap top is running on Windows Millenium. I have figured out how to tell the lap top to boot from an external source. I just don't know how to format the external source so it can be used to boot the lap top.

Here is a web site that might be of some help. Did you try right clicking on the external drive, selecting Format and copy system files as an option?

If it's an older laptop it's unikely to be able to boot from an external drive, and if it run W98 it needs USB drivers to use an ext HDD.

Best bet is simply to uninstall some applications you use less often and reinstall them with it being on the EXT drive, and also move data to it

You could use the HP Drive Key Boot Utility. It works with external USB drives too. If it's on an older laptop, you need to make sure it supports booting from a USB device.

Yeah basically set the boot priority to USB on your BIOS and it will flow in the present day into it each time you boot until you desire to press despite function key mandatory whilst booting. you additionally can put in the OS DVD and get it to repair the lacking sectors. in case you have the archives downloaded you may make a flash force right into a boot device and boot to that and installation the OS on your exterior or you may desire to easily burn the OS to a disc. Did you loose the unique disc?
