I've been living here for 5 years and every summer, I feel like I'm missing out on life when I wake up to 49 degree temps and a high of 60. It's kind of depressing, really. What do you say?

I just went on vacation to SF for the first time a week ago, and I was shocked at how cold it was! I think it's a beautiful city, but I hated being in California and having to wear a sweater!

Also, why is SF so foggy? I drove across the bridge and I couldn't even see the water.

Moving to a different neighborhood (i.e. The Mission, Noe) or to the 'burbs just a few minutes outside of the City proper will heat you up. Then you won't feel like you missed out.

I grew up in the Bay Area (just 20 miles away from downtown SF) and lived in SF proper for about 7 years, and you just learn to get used to the weather and the layering. Nothing cracks us natives up more than the tourists that come in shorts. Well, nothing cracks me up.

It does get depressing, and when I feel that way I head down to the beach or Chrissy Field or the top of Nob Hill and look around...it is so beautiful. And the fog adds to the mystique.

To the above poster who said "SF has no hills...": Are you kidding? Have you been here? There are hills all over the damn place. It is just a small city almost completely surrounded by the ocean, which keeps it temperate.

S: I live here, and have lived here, my whole life. You said no hills. You were wrong. Some do block the fog. Ever been the Mission? Noe Valley? They are not fog-socked areas in town. I have lived all over SF, and actually know what I am talking about, not just from an East Bay perspective (where I grew up). You can thumb me down all you'd like. But I know what I'm talking about.

The weather for much of the year is just too cold, foggy, and windy for me. Sept and October are really nice months in the city and I wish it was like that during summer there. I grew up in the East Bay and everytime I'd go out to the city I'd have to take a jacket or sweatshirt even though it was 90 degress where I lived and like 65 in the city. The weather in SF is one of it's biggest downfalls, especially anywhere near the ocean. Other parts of the Bay Area are not nearly that bad, SF just doesn't have any hills or mountains blocking the ocean like the rest of the Bay Area. Pretty much if you go anywhere else except the coast in the Bay Area it will be warmer, especially inland valley's. Or you can always try Southern CA, I live in San Diego now and the weather is near perfect here, although this year has been very cool compared to normal so far. But normally it's never too cold or too hot by the coast, pretty much 65-80 in the day year round and the nights here are much warmer than the Bay Area, during summer nightime temps are usually around 68-70 for the low.

edit: Annie, I meant hills like in the East Bay or Penninsula that block the fog from rolling in. Hills that are too steep and high to build on and not refering to SF's small hills that rise a like 150 feet and they don't exactly block the fog do they? And i know it's surrounded by water which is why it's so cold or as you call it "temperate" I grew up in the Bay Area so yeah I think I have been to the city and seen there hills more than once.
wow Annie I guess I need to spell it out for you slowly and maybe you should actually finish reading the entire sentence. I even explained it and you still can't comprehend what I am saying. I said that SF doesn't have any hills or mountains BLOCKING THE OCEAN LIKE THE REST OF THE BAY AREA. I never said it didn't have hills, just ones that DON'T BLOCK THE OCEAN, so no I wasn't wrong with what I originally said you just didn't finish reading the entire sentence and take things too literally. There is no other place in the Bay Area (except for the coast) that is exposed to the ocean as much as SF is. The Mission or Noe Valley are not quite as sunny as Walnut Creek or Livermore and much more foggier and colder, which is the comparison I was making in the first place. I'd give you another thumbs down if I could for being such a snatch, so get over yourself and go live somewhere sunny and maybe you won't be in such a foul mood all the time and might actually crack a smile and laugh for once.

I lived there my entire life. There are times when the weather is perfect. And there are places in the city that have better weather then others. you just need to know the spots.

If it realy bums you out, move down south like I did. 15 - 20 minutes and the weather inproves alot. Summers in the 90's or higher.

Its all on where you wake up, you can always visit elsewere.

Move to Oakland if you don't like the weather. People who are from SF don't like it when transplants come and whine about the fog, I mean, its not like its a secret or anything.

That said, there are lots of places to go and enjoy the sun during the summer. Drive up to Muir Woods, or down to the Peninsula, or over to the E. Bay. I'll never have to pay for an air conditioner, or heating oil or stuff that people in other parts of the US have to shell out for, and that's just fine with me.

It's basically just SF due to it's location on the bay, the tip of the peninsula, and the coastline. The Carmel/Monterey area has the exact same weather due to the location. However, other coastal and/or bay cities don't have the same weather conditions as their locations are better.

I love it. I grew up in LA and couldn't stand the summer heat.

It's pretty easy to go somewhere where the sun is shining, and it's nice to come home to cool weather.

I'm in the north bay area, and I personally love the weather here. And I like how cool it gets overnight (great sleeping weather) and in the mornings. But then again, I moved here from a state with tornados, hail, blizzards, extreme humidity and temps. This is heaven for me!
