Truthfully, in the U.S., we don't talk much about Ireland. That's too bad, because I think it has a great history with a lot to teach us. But in school, it really doesn't come up much, aside from the potato famine and the great immigration in the 1800's.

On the other hand, we're just now starting to see it pop up in some college-level Econ books as an example of an economic powerhouse, resulting from sound economic policies. Of course, since this is a relatively recent phenomenon, I don't think most Americans think about it, but maybe some of the younger kids will notice.

I read the book How the Irish Saved Civilization a while back, and it gave an interesting portrayal of Irish history, and I think its a story we all need to hear. I also had a chance to visit Dublin recently and took some tours that illustrated some of the incursions of the British into the lives of Ireland, and that also has lessons for us.

So, I wish I'd learned more when I was younger.

I don't know how it's presented in classes in the UK, but as an American, I can say that when I was going to school, just about the only time we really studied the Republic of Ireland was when we took geography classes. In the geography classes, they mainly dealt with basic information about history, culture, topography, and economics. Also, in our US history classes, there was much mention of the Potato Famine, because many Irish immigrants came to the US as a result of it. If I remember correctly, the conflict in Northern Ireland wasn't much touched upon.
