My wife asked that, in lieu of buying her an expensive gift, that I give one of her boys a big chunk of cash for college. I still want to get her something. I am taking her on a trip, but want to get her something she can hold in her hands, but is not terribly expensive.

She is pretty, looks much younger than 50, slender, athletic and very feminine. She also will not tell me what she wants for a gift, or implies that she doesn't want anything, which I assume is not true.

Why do women not want to tell you what they want for a gift? My first wife was the same way. I wouldn't hesitate if somebody asked me that question! Why do I have to figure it out?????? Help!!!!!!!

The college money was already delivered. Keep the nice suggestions coming, I really need help with this one, it is a serious question. The losers who made the vulgar comments would be best to keep their opinions to themselves.

One of the best gifts I ever got didn't cost my husband a dime. For some reason, turning 20 really was freaking me out (not much longer till I'm 30, and I'm looking forward to it).

I woke up on my 20th birthday to a pink carnation (my fave flower) on the pillow next to me. When I finally dragged my butt out of bed, pleased with the flower, but still feeling pretty bad because of turning 20, he sat me down on the couch, kneeled down next to me and held my hands. He told me how beautiful and amazing I was, and how he was so happy to have married me. He told me how he was looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together. How he appreciated me, cherished me and valued me.

Of course, I broke down into tears at this point! I was in my bathrobe with my hair uncombed and he still thought I was the most beautiful woman in the world.

We spent the rest of the day curled up together watching movies, or in the hottub splashing and laughing. I've never had a better day and it didn't cost a thing.

Only two suggestions I can give you. But first, about women lying when they say they don't want anything - it's true!:)) They are lying. Usually, they just don't want to tell you because they wanna see how much of their desires do you really know.
Now back to the suggestions - first is not so original. 50 is a very important age - a golden age. She turns 50 so you could celebrate with a golden ring.
But... more intimate, more less expensive, more touching - is to make her a photo album. Buy a ready made album and gather for each year a representative photo of her. In this way... she can practically hold her life in her hands and give you the opportunity to reminiscence all of that together. If you rap this in a beautiful paper with a glorious bow:)... and, of course, with the favorite flowers (50 if possible, of course) it would make a great and thoughtful gift.
I would definitively love it.

First thing I would do would be to look into what the status quo is for 50. Gold? Diamond? a google search would answer that.

Second, do something to surprise her instead of just a gift. Painting? Portrait of her or both of you done?

Don't forget the gag gifts to give to her to let her assume that is all she is getting. Handcuffs and whips.

But above all, card, poem, letter, something written down. You have to write down how much you love her. Emotion on paper means more than anything to a woman.

In the past some of the best gifts I got were because someone was listening to me when I mentioned I needed or wanted something. On top of getting what I needed and wanted I had someone listen to me when I thought they weren't. Example: a shirt I touched at the store but thought too costly and didn't buy it for myself. New dishes with the pattern I mentioned with the silverware in the pattern I mentioned to match.
It wasn't just that I got the stuff, the fact that he listened and payed attention to the details was the better gift.

Frankly, my friend, people of our age group don't know what to get them. Been there done that.

I believe each woman (middle class) has a list since their little girl days of big ticket items they want: 1-3 carot diamond ring, house, necklaces, etc. I have done all those, too. 75% of the time we are way off on taste and colors so let's just stay with writing the checks and not pretend we know.

YOu are probably a frugal man and choose not to bite on the cash for her son suggestion. Let's not go there to wonder why.

The big FIVE O is probably something for an accomplished man to ponder but perhaps a bit of an unwelcome reminder to a woman. Don't think they want that advertised on TV anyway. So for once, don't think about big gifts. Just fancy words and flowers. You'll find out fast enough if she means what she says.

Women don't say what they want because they don't want to put a dollar amount on a gift and sound greedy.
Diamonds are always a great gift.

I don't know if your wife will like this idea but this is the standard gift in my family - lots of sisters - and I love mine and get compliments on it every time I wear it. Husband bought me a really nice silver link chain necklace and all the brothers, sisters, children, etc. bought charms to put on it. Part of the fun is hearing why they chose that particular charm. All my sisters have these now but they all look different because we like different things and have different charms.

You should know her and her tastes, she doesn't want to pick out her own gift. Think!!!! What does she like, what are her intrests? You can do this and you don't need her help. I have confidence in you....
