me and my colleges at work were talking about tryes for cars and just how much they cost, when someone said she had nitrogen in her tyres to make them more effeciant. but none of us had herd of this and all thought that nitrogen was highly explosive! does anyone no anything about this and does anyone no a link or web page to back up the information please. many thanks ben.

No it's not a daft Idea. Nitrogen resists heat build up better than air (which contains water), and as the molecules are larger than air, it takes longer for them to seep out, deflating the tyre.

Also, it's an inert gas, so it won't degrade the interior of the tyre.

The real reason they offer this service is marketing: The customer will pay a little extra initially, then return to the same dealer for 'free' top ups and then buy the next set of tyres at the same dealer without checking the prices elsewhere. The machines that tyre fitters have are not normally pure nitrogen, but typically range from 90% to 97%.

Yes it is perfectly safe but depending on your vehicle usage it might be a waste of money for you. Most of your racing circuits use it in their tires and also all commercial aircraft and alot of private aircraft use it in their tires because it doesn't expand or deflate with temperature change. Also the molecules are larger than plain air so you have less slow leaks using it but unless you drive many thousands of miles a year or drive alot over 100 mph you will see little savings in using the nitrogen over air. Also someone said a big disadvantage was finding it if you needed to fill a low tire, regular air is almost 80% nitrogen anyway so there is no problem with mixing regular air with nitrogen.

Ive heard of it-it is true. Some local tire dealers in my area promote that. Supposedly it helps your tires stay inflated to the propper level, which technically would save on gas. But really-its all a matter of opinion. I have yet to see anything supporting this claim.
I dont think there could be any danger from using it, but then again i really dont believe it would help any either.
Also what are you to do if you are out and get a slow leak in a tire? How many gas stations have nitrogen tire pumps?

This has been a long time coming, All the major airlines are mandated by the FAA to put nitrogen in all passenger type aircraft so if a tire blows out on landing, it will be less likely to cause a fire, and all Emergency vehicles that I know of carry nitrogen in their tires. Nitrogen is a larger molecule so it stays in the tire longer and does not leak out as fast as air.
I, Myself carry nitrogen in my tires, I got it free of charge at Sames club where I bought my tires.

Nitrogen's actually an inert gas, the opposite of explosive. Its large molecules means a tyre inflated with it is slower to lose pressure naturally, plus it tends to expand and contract less than air.

It's usually used to inflate aircraft tyres, especially on commercial aircraft, which have a terribly hard life, having to accelerate instantaneously from zero to well over 100 mph on landing, plus support several hundred tonnes of aircraft all at once.

I have heard of people using it in vehicle tyres, especially for racing, but it's a little difficult to find for yer footpump.

Aaron M has it. There is less expansion and contraction with the Nitrogen. Therefore less change in tire pressure. I have heard the Nascar guys use Nitrogen, but that may be a rumor.

It is actually a good idea, it doesnt change alot with tempature the way air does, so you dont have to unfill and refill with differing weather conditions, it stays the same all year, and also allows the tire to run cooler (helps the pressure stay the same), I believe it is Belle Tire that does this method.

Nitrogen is not explosive--air you breath is 78 percent nitrogen already. Not worth the effort in my opinion--just check your tire pressures once a month and save the money.

Nitrogen is the most used propellant in the fix-a-flat cans. They all come with a stick on tag to put on the tire warning the tire repair guy thats he needs to put his cigar down.
