One simple answer...Lobbyists. Pharmaceuticals have our government in their pocket. Our Congress is not thinking about the people, they go on who contributes the most to their campaigns and Pharmaceuticals have the big bucks.
Most of the research and development is done by public entities such as universities, the drug companies rarely do their own research and development, therefore it is just a dummy item that they use to jack up the prices.

worry-loose information is erroneous. Why does worry-loose information anticipate that each and each u . s . a . buys American drugs. they do no longer. Germany, India, China etc. etc additionally sell drugs. American drugs are as much as ten situations extra much less costly exterior the U.S. extensive numbers are produced and sent exterior the country just to be smuggled returned in. how many pills certainly treatment something any further, yet fairly grow to be, optimistically, life long prescriptions. how many young babies start up getting drugs prescribed in grade college, in spite of the outcomes. They tout the fictitious "warfare on drugs" and the two instructors and scholars are stoned daily.

Because of the high costs and time required to get FDA approval for the US market, as compared to getting approval in other markets. This considerably shortens the length of time they can sell the drug under patent protection (i.e. before it get generic competition).
Because countries like Canada buy in bulk, but in limited quantities.
Because countries like Mexico would otherwise violate patent laws and manufacture it themselves.
Because that's the price of having the newest and best drugs available.

I think the rest of the world should help pick up that tab considering many drugs are developed abroad. yet we still pay for R&D cost. Companies are deserving of recoupment from the public for R&D cost or else their would be no incentive for r&D. But the US should not be the only country to pay for it

Who else is going to pay for it?
Pay for it directly when buying a drug from a company...
Or pay for it indirectly through taxes when some sort of government run "universal health insurance" is instated.
Either way you're paying for it.
Or, if you'd rather no new drug breakthroughs, then no one has to pay.
