Actually, since you asked a legal question the correct LEGAL answer is Yes, you can sue and Yes, you can call the cops.

In each of the above, the likely outcome is as follows:

1. You sue. You have no evidence of ownership. you lose.

2. You call the cops. You are asked how did the person come into possession of the item. You tell them it was a gift but you now want it back.
The cops tell you not to ever file a false report again and you're lucky if they don't file charges against you.

There is no prevailing law that requires a gift be returned. This is on reason why men should never give a woman a promise/engagement ring on a birthday, Christmas, or other holiday as a gift. If it is not given as a gift and only as a promise/engagement ring you can request that it be returned if the "contract" that it established is broken (i.e. break up or call off engagement). I learned this lesson the hard way.

No, it was a gift. You can't take a gift back. The cops won't do anything and a judge will dismiss your case. Sorry, but you're just going to have to call that one a lose and choose better friends next time.

A gift is a "gift" and should never be taken back.

Gift is defined as: something voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation

Without compensation is the part that keeps you from getting it back.

I do not think so. A gift is when you give something to someone, and you can ask for it back but the person is not legally obligated to give it back since when you gave it to them ownership was transferred from you to him/her.

Be careful who you give gifts to. Once its given, its not yours any more. That's the definition of a gift. Unless it was given in anticipation of that person doing something which they then failed to do, there's nothing you can do.

No. It was given as a gift. Even an engagement ring does not have to be returned if the marriage is called off.

No. a gift is not something you should expect back no matter the circumstances.
