everyone's experience would mosre than likely be different. Here is my experience: I was a 19 year old mom, weighed no more than 90 pds, when i went into labor i weighed about 120. i was very scared and did not know what to expect, i was in labor for 12 hours. The beginning felt like really bad menstral cramps, as it got more into labor the pain was bad, its a very uncomfortable pain that just will not stop no matter what. All I can reccommend is its like the worst cramps ever times 2. But its nothing that you cant get through. I had my mom and sister with me through the entire thing and they kept talking to me about the new baby and it took my mind off the pain for the most part. Just keep in the back of your mind that no matter how much pain you are/will be in, its all worth it in the end because you have a beautifu miracle.
Good Luck!

Yes, it is worse. And period pain can be very bad. I get cramps so badly I cannot physically move for an entire day before I get my period.
But once you see the baby, it was so worth it!!! I have a 2 1/2 year old, and want another very badly!!

All I can say at 20 weeks is I hope it's only as bad as the worst period pain, but after reading, talking to other mothers, and watching videos I can say that it's nothing like it and it hurts like hell. Most moms say the pain just sort of disappeared when they held their baby.

YES its alot of pain, and yes it is far worse than your worst period pains....to me it was nothing like a period pain...you feel lots of pressure on your bottom half...for me it felt like something huge was trying to come out of my back half...and the contractions...well its really bad...but its the most worth it horrible pain ever!!

On another note, there are ways to cope with the pain...controlled breathing and positioning helps a great deal..especially with a devoted and wonderful support person there to help you

?? I should imagine it's a lot worse than your worst period pain. Think about the dynamics of a baby fitting through a v.gina. Ouch.

Yes it is very painful. I starts off with a tolerable pain. Then the closer you get the more painful it is and the longer it is. Period pain is nothing compared to labor pains.

I am not one for pain..and had an epidural for my 3rd child. But they have to shut it off soon before actual delivery. Every woman is different. Although we all expierence pain, each handles it differently and there's different kinds of pain. My contractions were like warm sinsations (like a hotflash) in my lower body. Then a tightness. The actual birthing...well, that's painful but also relieving. I think some women will understand me.

I have never given birth. And after my mum's experiences, I have no intention of ever having kids.

When I was born, she split right down the perenium. When my brother was born, she split again and nearly died of blood loss (she lost 5 pints), and spent 2 days in intensive care, and they had no idea if she'd survive.

My dad promptly went and got a vasectomy so that he couldn't get her pregnant again!

But she's explained it to me in terms I'll understand - an impacting wisdom tooth is probably the worst pain I've ever been in (bar a few sprained joints, but after a few mins those only hurt if you move them). Apparently wisdom teeth are a comparative picnic to childbirth.

If I want kids in later life, I will adopt.

Contractions feel like someone hammering nails on the lower part of your spine (funny bone) and punching you in your lower belly with boxing gloves at the same time. It last a short time.. however it feels like forever.. then when the baby is coming out is just bad when the head is coming out.. I suggest have the nurses pour warm water on the birth area to ease on the muscle strain, it works wonders.. Once the baby is out it feels like a relief and then you have one more thing to come out.. the placenta.. which is like having a second baby. After all that is done.. is all over.. no contractions.. just sense of relief.

All women different and each pregnancy can be different for the individual woman as well. Some can't handle the first twinge and focus on it as severe pain that cannot be endured, rather than the proceess of birthing and go thru it. Others can raise above the pain level and go thru with no meds or intervention at all. We all different.
