Most Indians are not free to select their partners and must depend on their parents. Most parents in India micro manage the lives of their children and are basically arranging a security blanket for their old age because there is no social security system in India. India is still an agrarian society which basically needs to propagate itself in order to survive because if you have no children you have no security in your old age etc that is why it has such a huge population. Most Indians irrespective of religion are married only to make children. Marriage in India has no connotations with love it is just a process to facilitate breeding. As far as women are concerned their position is worse than men when it comes to choosing partners. Women in India are mere sexual objects and are not accorded any respect by Indian men especially North Indian men. So in terms of creating an enlightened and equal society India has a long way to go. Freedom is not always a priority in such a society but getting the best deal is one. At the end of the day it doesn't matter if you are Hindoo or Muslim, Indian Women is the keyword you should be looking for. You will find the same sad story across board.
