I don't think oil and gas are considered manufactured goods since the shortage is due to them occurring naturally.

Skilled machinist shortage? Really? My husband has been a skilled machinist, journeyman, and CNC trained. CNC is computer work. Since the late '80's. He is not getting the hours or the work he had when we married in 1995, then he worked 6 12 hour shifts a week and was put on mandartory 7 day work weeks periodically. This came to a quick halt in AUGUST 2001, when for the first time ever he was "laid off" for 3 weeks due to a sharp drop in business. He got called back and never works over time anymore. Since he puts the molds together for the assembly line jobs that are being globalized he is in turn getting cutbacks. Don't you get cause and effect? Find out some facts before generalizing. And the tinker jobs may not take talent or a college education but still are important for the continued growth and employment here at home.

Shortage...tough, it depend how you define it.

Xbox, Sony PS3, WII...people are always lining up to get them.

Hybrid car...Toyota Prius...you have to order.

Many thing is available in online shopping, and people travel. So shortage is not so much of it unless you are talking the world will run out of it..like oil.
