I want to buy a diamond for an engagement ring, but hate paying full retail. Can i go to the diamond exchanges in places like NYC, or do i risk getting taken advantage of?

Overstock.com is pretty cheap for rings. That's where my dad bought some anniversary rings for my mum. Also www.diamondsafe.com. You should just search online to get the cheapest deal, but be careful that you don't get fake diamonds or nothing at all from another site you may find. Make sure you buy it from a trusted retailer.

Cheers!

Try online www.uniondiamonds.com.

I bought a diamond there and was very happy. I then had the loose diamond set locally, and appraised.

This might be a longshot... We got my engagement ring from a jewlery wholesaler... So, you might have to ask around for someone to work with you.. My ring was being sold at a chain store for $ 2,500 and my husband paid $750 (cash), I would say that's a great deal.... Try overstock.com to see some options... Find out what type of ring your gf likes and find something that you both can agree on.. Size/Carat and such.
