I think a lot depends on state of mind, yes...but not all. Example: if you think you are going to fail, chances are you will. Studies have shown that cancer survivors all have that "i can beat this" or "i'm going to survive" attitude. The right attitude goes a long way.

No. Being positive is though. Your life could be a hopless crumbling world (i.e. your mom dies, you lose your crappy job a week later, and your once never fail friends now rarely call or invite you anywhere because they know you can't afford it, or you could be one of the victims in Darfur). Are you happy in extreme situations? No, but you can be negative about your situation and force yourself into a deep derpression or you can be positive and force yourself to get up after crying and do something to improve your situation as well as join activities that will keep you from turning negative. The goal is to reach and hope that eventually you can be at a state in which a positive attitude leads you to a state of happiness.

Happy is a state of mind.
Happiness is a state of the being or what I call The Spirit. That sixth sensor deep inside you.
The suffix " ness " means of the being. So when you are grateful, you are that of mind, but when you have gratefulness, you are that of your being.

I think so.
Even in the mix of emotional trauma from unrelated situations, happiness can be experienced from other sources and still be aware of the negative things.

that's one meaning of the word. there are people who spend their lives figuring out stuff like that. it really depends on its usage. happiness can refer to what makes you happy, and it can refer to being happy.
