Unfortunately, I'm not pregnant yet, but I hope to be a future belly-rubber soon. Even if a newly-pregnant mother's stomach is still flat, they rub it. Is it a subconscious move? Is it from feeling the changes inside the body? Or does it maybe come from feeling the skin stretch slightly? Hopefully, one day soon, I can answer my own questions, but for now I have to rely on your responses.

The rubbing is a bonding process which has a name, but I just can't think of it right now. It's totally subconscious. While I was pregnant each time, even before I knew officially, I would catch myself rubbing or patting or resting an arm over my belly, even when it was still pretty flat. I think it is a way for pregnant women to touch their unborn child the same way you will nuzzle your baby when it is born. Babies thrive on touch and won't survive without it. Perhaps the belly rubbing is mother nature's way of preparing us for all the touching and bonding that's going to take place once the baby is born.

Rubbing the belly before anything shows is what alot of women do when pregnant, it is probably and most likely subconsious. The little life growing inside makes you want to rub, to let the little one know you are there maybe, no one knows for sure. About the 3rd or 4th month you can feel the movments of the baby, at first you may think it's just gas or something like that but then you realize it's not and you just smile, feeling contented.

Well there are a few reasons I think I did it - stretching causes the skin to itch, you know there is a little person in there and it is like a way of communicating, and it is a way of feeling like you're protecting your belly by keeping it calm and covered. Later in the pregnancy it is just because the baby is ALWAYS moving in there and sometimes you have to adjust (push to a different location) a foot or an elbow or sometimes just rubbing the belly calms the baby down, like a massage.

I think it's an unconscious thing. I know I did it constantly, and after I gave birth for a few weeks I still felt myself do it. I don't really have an answer to why women originally start doing it, before the belly has grown big- later on I know I would feel it to feel my baby moving around. I think it's sort of how when you are near someone you love you just reach for them and touch them without even thinking about it- you know your baby is in there and you subconsciously reach for him/her.

I'm preg (15 weeks), heres my reasoning....

If I'm in public, and someones looking at me weird, I rub or put my hand there to show that I AM preg., and not just fat!

If the belly itchs,I rub it to try to make the itching go away.

If the baby is in an uncomfortable position (for me) I rub to sort of move the baby so I'll be more comphy.

I also rub sometimes because I'm thinking about the baby, and letting it know I'm thinking about it (I also talk to it!)

I also rub sometimes because I'm hungry!!!

When I was first pregnant it was the thought of having a little baby in my belly. As my belly got bigger I rubbed it because I could feel the baby moving. When I got huge it was because I could feel parts of the baby and I always tried to guess if it was a little foot, arm, leg, etc.

Sometimes it feels better to rub my belly...especially if the baby is moving around alot and kinda making me uncomfortable.

Also in a sense it's kind of like rocking your baby to sleep. You can't touch her...so rubbing your belly is the next best thing I suppose.

I`m not sure why I did it...I never was itchy or anything but I think it`s more of a bonding thing...The other thing I did alot without realizing it was, when standing I would rock back and forth (from side to side) !!! Just a slow steady rocking...I don`t know maybe I`m preparing for all the nights I`ll be rocking my baby to sleep!! I did it with my first 2 and this one to!!

I've been rubbing my belly since I found out I was pregnant. I think it's because I can't wait to get my hands on these sweet babies (yeah, twins!) and that is the closest I can get right now.

For me, at 9 months and ready to blow, its a sense of closeness. Feeling the unborn child move is like you and the babies little secret. After all not everyone can feel what your child is doing like you can. Anouther reason is because I am not used to having a belly the size that I have, so its kind of different.
