Enlightenment is the real deal. It is rare, however. To recognize enlightenment in others: Can they accurately predict the future of something from observing the present? Can they accurately describe your personality from a short conversation with you? This presupposes that YOU know your personality to test them. Can they master new skills with minimum training?
The guy near the top (Doug_Donaghue) is correct. False teachers abound. A truly enlightened person should not want or need your money. Peace and harmony do not come in this life. Realization of that fact is the first truth you will learn when enlightened.
To recognize enlightenment in yourself is actually harder. Everyone wants it to be for them. It is hard to be objective in judging the above when saying it is so will let you believe it is so. Working with a teacher or mentor will help you be more objective. Cryptic tests are the norm for these guys. "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" When you can answer all these questions easily, you and they will know the feelings of enlightenment are genuine.

First, quantify "enlightened souls" and see if it comes close to anything that can be scientifically examined, tested or described.
I don't even know what those two words mean. It sounds non-falsifiable and nonsensical to me.

'Enlightened souls' have always made a pretty good living selling the 'peace and harmony' line to people who want to believe in it. But 'peace and harmony' have never existed in the natural world, and they never will.
