Fred Thompson describes himself as a Conservative. He has said Federalism is his guiding principle, a lodestar. "[It] provided a basis for a proper analysis of most issues: "Is this something government should be doing? If so, at what level of government?"
"Our government, under our Constitution, was established upon the principles of Federalism -- that the federal government would have limited enumerated powers and the rest would be left to the states. It not only prevented tyranny, it just made good sense. States become laboratories for democracy and experiment with different kinds of laws. One state might try one welfare reform approach, for example. Another state might try another approach. One would work and the other would not. The federal welfare reform law resulted from just this process."

"Federalism also allows for the diversity that exists among the country's people. Citizens of our various states have different views as to how traditional state responsibilities should be handled. This way, states compete with each other to attract people and businesses -- and that is a good thing."

He certainly LOOKS like a President. I like the way he put Michael Moore in his place.

But I need to learn more about him. I need to see how he reacts when the skeleton is let out of the closet.

I like what I see so far, but we'll have to see where he really comes down on some issues. Also what skeleltons does he have in his closet? They almost all have some. Hopefully his are nothing serious. Other than that I like what I see so far. He won't be afraid to talk straight to the American people and he's somewhat Reaganesque.

His views on Federalism are sound. I don't know enough about the rest of his politcal philosophy to make a sound judgment. But he may well be a better actor than politician.

His name is starting to gain a bit of discussion where I'm from. I'm trying to learn more about him as I'm not too thrilled with any of the contenders at this point.

Fred Thompson is a fairly good actor, so-so Senator, has a bimbo for a trophy wife and would be as big a mistake as president as W is.
Federalism, gives us states rights, which gave us segregation and lynchings. as Trent Lott said,"those were the good ole days".

I completely agree with that. Our Federal government has too much power.

He's a closet NAFTA supporter and a globalist.

No news here. Real conservatives won't have anything to do with him.

I don't know yet. I need to hear him talk more.

For now, I'm still voting for Ron Paul, the only real conservative in the slate.

I'll believe he is a Federalist when he says he believes states have the right to legalize medical marijuana.
