The best? If it's a really long trip you gotta mix it up a bit. Drove across the country (1995) and these are some of the ones that stick in my head from memories of that trip
Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Dire Straits, All reggae, Janes Addiction, Bob Dylan, Blues Travler, and last but not least the Dead. If I was going on a trip now I’d also include Modest Mouse, I like driving to them.

old rock and 60s music. Some stones....like Paint it Black, some lynrd skynrd....like Sweet Home Alabama, maybe throw in that silly 'Bye, bye miss American Pie', 'Mr Preacher man', Jimi Hendrix 'all along the watch tower'
I reckon the majority of the soundtrack to 'Forrest Gump' is pretty good for a road trip. You wouldnt think it but the songs are all wicked, protest music and 60s greats.

It depends on what kind of music or what kind of mood you are into,if you feel upbeat rock songs/punk songs can be good and if you feel like chilling out house/trance songs might do the trick its your choice, just try using variety of songs if you change moods often..have a safe trip!=)
