You are going to have to drop the gas tank to remove the fuel pump on that truck as the fuel pump is on the top of the tank and there is no work around.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to remove the pump without dropping the tank or hacking up the metal work in the back to get to it.

A simple solution for most is to cut the pump in the tank out of the loop. Simply disconnect the power source and the fuel lines and install an electric fuel pump on the frame rail near the tank. Run your 12V positive/ignition to the pump and reconnect the fuel lines.

This problem has plauged most consumers for years and is typcially either a costly repair or a weekend spent cussing and getting covered in gas. Installing the new fuel pump on the frame rail can be accomplished in a short period of time and if it fails again in the future it can be swapped out in a matter of minutes.

Remember to ensure your wires are properly terminated along with your fuel lines. If any wire is hanging loose make sure you loom it or add it to a pre-existing wire loom already on the vehicle. Changes are you can just cut the pig tail off the end of the old fuel pump wiring and use it to power the new.

The tank has to be dropped. Not an easy task. Depending on which engine/injection system you have, you could put a pump an external pump on, but just remember that standard rubber hose and hose clamps may not hold. You also run the risk of fuel starvation. Meaning that the external pump can't draw enough fuel through the original pump.

I've put three of those in a 1991 Blazer. Two of them were the same day. Good luck, and study your vocabulary cause you'll need all the good words.

Bypass the tank pump and put a Holley or Carter electric pump in the fuel line ahead of and below the tank on the frame---wire it into your existing wiring and hook up the fuel lines to it. Make sure to get one compatible with your fuel injection system, EFI, MFI, TBI, etc.--different pressures involved---speed shops should carry them or online.
