This is done mostly for the same reasons folk do not
use their real names on Yahoo Answers.
Think about why you do not use your birth name here
and you'll understand the motivation of some authors.

Writing is still seen as a rather lowly profession, so some wish to disguise who they are.
Others want to go in a different direction and not befoul their name (Stephen King - Richard Bachman) should it go wrong

so that when the go out in public and sign a check or something no one knows who they are... it doesn't seem to work sometimes.
