I have a broadband connection and 2 laptops. I want to connect both of them to the internet at the same time, either through a fixed line or wireless. I think I will need a router. I have a couple of questions -
1. Exactly what equipment I will need to purchase and how to configure?
2. Which brand do I go for?
3. What will be the cost of wired and wireless options?
I am in US.

The least expensive method is to go with wired. It is also the safest because you won't be broadcasting your internet connection. Here what you need.
1. A hub or a network switch. $20 - $30
2. Cable from hub/switch to computers. (2) @ $6 = #$12

WIFI. To set up a WIFI you will need a "Wireless Router". Also, if either of your laptops is not WIFI capable you would need a wireless adapter. Wireless is very handy because it allows you to use your computer just about anywhere around the house. You will need to encrypt your signal so that your neighbors don't "borrow" your signal.

Wireless router $50 and up.

You will need an Ethernet router.

If you decide on wireless, that is the only cable you will need. The transceiver modules connect directly to the laptops.

My personal opinion is wired is more secure, but that's only my opinion.

If you go wired, connect an Ethernet cable from each laptop to an open output on the router.

I can't really help you with who is the best. The only suggestion I have is visit a web site that has a customer feedback section. As an example, circuitcity.com. While you're on the Internet, you can shop around for the best deal.

buy a wireless router like the linksys w54g or something like that, it has both wireless along with four ports to hard wire. I think there around $50 and I have had mine for around 3.5 years with no problems. Just make sure you ask somebody that knows wireless to setup your security very important
