Very highly alkaline! The reaction of metallic sodium with water produces hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide solution, according to the following reaction:

2 Na + 2 H2O =========> 2 NaOH + H2

I would say alkaline. When sodium reacts with water, you will a get a solution of sodium hydroxide, and hydrogen gas released during the reaction.

Formula: 2 Na +2 H2O = 2NaOH+ H2

An alkaline solution contains hydroxide ions.

when sodium react with water the resulting solution is alkaline because a base known as sodium hydroxide is formed .
equation=Na+H2O =Na OH + H2
base hydrogen gas given out

Reaction is:

2Na + 2H2O =====> 2NaOH + H2

The sodium hydroxide formed is very alkaline in water, hydrogen is given off.

Alkaline due to the formation of hydrogen ions
Na+ H2O → H2 + NaOH

Sodium will react with water to give of Hydrogen in this fashion,

2Na(s) + 2H20(l) --> 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)

Since NaOH is left in solution it becomes basic not acidic. And giving off hydrogen doesn't indicate if a solution becomes Acidic or Basic.

Generally its observed when non metallic oxides are mixed with water, they form acidic solution. Sulphur dioxide is also not the exception.On mixing with water it results in formation of Sulphurous acid. SO2 + H2O ==> H2SO3(Sulphurous Acid)

Yes, you're right, it's an alkali metal and forms Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic) and Hydrogen.

2Na +2H2O --> 2NaOH +H2
The resulting solution, NaOH produces OH- (hydroxide) ions in water which gives rise to its alkaline nature.
