the Ramones are greatly overrated.

they were in no way groundbreaking; the genre was around 10 years before they got into it and they didn't add anything special. their 4/4 time and generic punk riffs require no artistic talent; their catchy songs are just glorified pop. they're a large part of why punk is dead.

The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Damned, among others, are what is wrong with punk: the commercial success, the marketable image (compared to real DIY punk, yes, it's extremely marketable), and the lack of anything remotely important to say, especially politically which was a HUGE part of punk.

think what you will about this, but anyone that's known anything about the punk scene beyond what Hot Topic and MTV advertise to them realizes this.

Certainly groundbreaking. One of the first and best American punk rock bands. The first time I saw and heard Green Day, I immediately thought of the Ramones.
"I wanna be sedated" is one of the best three minute rock songs ever, in my humble opinion.
You get a star from me for being a fellow fan!

They already ARE a part of music - and pop culture - history.

They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

They are mentioned as an influence by nearly every indie, punk, and rock act out there.

They're a band whose first record came out over 30 years ago, and their t-shirts are still sold to kids at the mall, for crying out loud!

They are icons, and will remain so FOREVER.

to put them in the POP category is an abomination.
they are was and always will be punk.....

I dont think there is a punk band out there NOW that doesnt owe them a debt of gratitude for paving the way for punk music in society today.
to continuously pack places like CBGB's and the whiskey in those days took word of mouth and the skills to back those words up....

had the chance to see them in 96. it was awesome, even than towards the last days of their career as a band they still were able to go otu there and give the audience what it wanted, pure straight up punk music.

RIP JOEY

I think they will be missed, they influenced so many british punk bands to just get up there and play, their songs hve attitude and a bouncy feel to them and great lyrics, they were innovators of there time and should be put in the rock n roll hall of fame if they arnt already.
