Bankrupts can't get Credit = so no Credit Cards (or accounts with Cheque Books)
However you SHOULD be able to get a 'Basic' Bank Account with a Debit card.
Suggest you ask your existing Bank (you may have to insist on seeing the Manager - there is little to be made from bankrupt customers so they are not keen to offer these accounts, however, by law, they MUST make them available)

Hi Michelle,
Are you still bankrupt or have you been discharged yet?
I was in the same situation as you. I had to declare myself bankrupt due to ex-husband leaving me in HUGE debt. My bank accounts etc had to be frozen and closed. I opened a basic bank account with Barclays, but this does not include a debit card. I was going to get one of those pre-paid debit cards as it was very awkward not being able to buy off the internet etc. I then surfed the net about basic bank accounts that offer debit cards and found that Halifax have a basic account with a visa electron card, the account is called 'easycash account'. I applyed for this. They sent me a letter to say that i was bankrupt, but i sent them a copy of the discharge letter, and they then opened the account for me. I am not sure if they will give an undischarged and account, but it is worth a try. try going to the local banks in your town and asking. Barclays do not have a debit card with their basic account so do not bother trying there. Good luck with you search.
If you want any help, just let me know.
Hope this helps??
Lucia

Bankrupts arent allowed to hold any bank accounts full stop! Bear in mind that if you get a pre-paid credit card and the bankruptcy people find it, they can request copies of your statement to see how much your putting into it - they then may ask why your not using htat cash to pay off your debt!

to all the people who talk about debit cards - you cant get them as a bankrupt because they are part of the visa scheme, so they dont check your bank account, but make the payment anyway - which could take you overdrawn, which you cant do, so you cant get one - sorry.
in theory you could get a visa electron card - because that uses a syatem where it actually checks your account, but you try and find a bank to give a bankrupt one - i couldnt.

I have filed bankruptcy and still got credit cards, checking acct with debit, etc. You need to ACTIVELY work on repairing your credit now. Look into secured cards if you need to. also, a lot of grocerys sell prepaid credit cards.
Hope this helps.

Get a gift card with a mastercard or visa logo on it. That should let you order anything online.
