the car is mercedes 1991 350sdl and i have never before had trouble starting it save for a few very cold days back in winter.

I go to turn on my car to drive to work - its a diesel so i turn it halfway, the glow light comes on, and when it goes off i turn the key the rest of the way- nothing happens - no sound no stalling or anything, just completely silent. I tried about 15 times same thing happens.

My gas is pretty low but that should have nothing to do with starting the car. I hadn't left the lights or anything on all night. I checked my lights and radio still work so that makes me question whether its the battery in the first place?

Nothings changed between last night and now what could it be??

I have one of those jumpstarting/car battery charging machines but I dont want to use it if the battery is the problem.

Only other thing i could think of is a loose connection or something - but why would this happen all of the sudden now?

thanks in advance_)

Have the battery cables cleaned & inspected. Check that the battery is fully charged. If OK then check the Park/Neutral switch is operating correctly. Try moving the shifter to neutral to start. If OK then have the starter motor inspected.

Could be the ignition switch or bad neutral safety switch or loose connection. For neutral safety problem, try wiggling the shifter or move it from Park to Drive gear and then back to Park position or Neutral and try to restart. Other problems might require a mechanic to diagnose for current going to starter or not. If power is at the starter solenoid, would be a bad solenoid.

Starters can be goofy like that to were they just kill over for no reason, so, I would suspect that or the battery, check the voltage in the batteries and if they are good, than its got to be the starter.
