I would like to buy cream rather than some elaborate and quetionable method, but am interested in anything anybody has to contribute

Just use fairy liquid in warm water with a cloth or brush. For stubborn areas, try whitening toothpaste, but not on leather because it is mildly abrasive.

Baby wipes!!!
Honest to God!! We use them on our shoes and I have a pair of white leather shoes and this works great!
I am not kidding! Buy a travel pack of baby wipes to see for yourself before buying a larger package.

Kiwi and Cavalier each make a nice white creme polish.
