Because their starting rotation is a complete joke right now, a lot of that due to injuries, and their everyday lineup is full of overpaid guys past their prime like Giambi, Damon, and Abreu.

They lack heart, motivation, and leadership. Derek Jeter is the Captain, but he's NOT a leader. He does what he has to do to win, but doesn't carry other players. The Yankees don't have a leader on their team like they have in previous years. Maybe when Clemens comes back, he can rally the troops a little bit.
They have several players with bloated contracts who are playing like they have Mono (Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, Mike Mussina). Joe Torre, as always, makes highly questionable managerial moves. Brian Cashman, with $220 million, put together a truly awful team, with absolutely no chemistry whatsoever. He should be fired on the spot, and never, ever be allowed to GM anywhere again in MLB.
It's just really a sad state of affairs in the Bronx. They need to fire Torre and bring in a manager who can spark a team and motivate them. They need to fire Cashman and hire a real GM. And they need to unload some of the bloated contracts that aren't producing, and try to get younger again.

it doesn't matter because as long as Yahoo, and ESPN always keep them in the media spotlight it won't hurt their sales at all.
I know everyone thinks the Yankees are invincible, but that is why alot of people don't like them. They are like every other team that has a bad year it happens.
I'm not saying the author of this is saying that, but it seems alot of the fans as well as the badnwagon New York Media, like Yahoo for example, you can't go one day without seeing new york on the front page of their sports section, even though they are losing they write articles like how could they lose, like they it's the end of the world because they are having a bad season, what arrogance on their part.
Yankees will buy their way out of it and they will be fine, if not this year then probably next year, every team should want to win it every year, but not team should act like they are entitled to it every year.

it's really very simple. yanks arent hitting consistently, (bobby a has struggled all year and everyone in the lineup except posada and jeter have struggled at one time or another). their defense is just plain old horrible, (jeter looks lost at shortstop at times). AND THEN, there is pitching. the starters are a mess, the bullpen is overworked and struggling and mariano cant get in enough games to get started. hope this helps.

They are not struggling now. Their starting pitching in the past two series is good, and the bats are coming alive. They need to get rid of Farnsworth though. He is absolutely useless.

Honestly...And this is coming from a devoted Red Sox Fan!!!Its your pitching dude.Your offense is only so good, if you have a pitcher that's good enough to win a game.you need to get betta starters, Pettite and Wang are awesome, but you have Desalvo and the rest of the Minor league pitchers who simply are not ready to pitch in the MLB.And well your manager is really not lighting any fire in his boys. It's time Torre and Cashmen both go.

Because their pitching sucks. They are lucky to get their starter into the sixth inning. They need to score 10 runs just to win a game.
