It would depend on where the pirate was pirating at. In Europe and the Carribean it would probably be a cutlass. In the far east it would probably be a scimitar. Pirates were opportunist. If they found something the liked better than what they were carrying no doubt they would use it instead. I'm sure atleast one pirate carried a katana. It's all about prefrence and availablilty. Extremely large pirates may not have carried a sword, jus a dagger for sticky situations and something along the lines of a harpoon to fight with. A seven and a half foot tall giant would look a little odd carrying a dinky cutlass.
To answer yourquestion, They called it sword. A police officer doesnt call his weapon a Glock 21 .45 caliber pistol. He calls it a gun. Simplicity is often best.

Now I'm guessing that you are talking about the classical "golden age" of Piracy as depicted in "Pirates of the Carribean" that being the case, there are all sorts of swords on display, Rapiers, Sabres, Hangers. The classic "piratey" sword is though, of course - The Cutlass.
True story- Friend of mine is a very good "Role Play" pirate, he's got all the gear and a good hat. Someone walked up to him once and said "what do you call that sword then?" The Pirate fixed him with a steely glare and replied
"Alice"

Pirates are usually shown with cutlasses. They are rather short and wide curved swords with big guards over the hand. Pirates might use many types of swords, but this one was found to be good for sailors.

Pirates usually just called their swords...well, swords. They were commonly referred to, however, as CUTLASSES.
Pirates and sailors from southern Asia commonly used a broader flatter sword with a curved edge called a SCIMITAR.
It really just depends on the type of sword.
:) Hope this helps.

The broader sword that someone mentioned and called a scimitar is actually a sea axe and there are three on the crest of Middlesex County

Depending on the era of pirate that your talking about it is called a cutlass, saber, scimitar, rapier or epee. It really depends on the time frame and the geographic area they were from.
