I've recently suffered the loss of a close family member as well and have relied on my music collection to help me get through this trying and hard time. Artists who have greatly helped me include MercyMe (especially their current single out called "Bring the Rain"), Jeremy Camp, and Nicole C Mullen (her song "Reedemer"). I included a part of the lyrics from "Bring the Rain" so that you may see also how this song has a such a healing effect and how these awesome men of God have written such meaningful songs that almost every song on their cd's can help you through whatever the Devil may throw your way.
I am Yours regardless of
The clouds that may loom above
Because You are much greater than my pain
You who made a way for me
By suffering Your destiny
So tell me what's a little rain
So I pray
Bring me joy, bring me peace
Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory
And I know there'll be days
When this life brings me pain
But if that's what it takes to praise You
Jesus, bring the rain

Death metal describes a particular style of music, not the lyrical content. There are very few good "Christian Death Metal" bands (Believer springs to mind), but there's nothing that prevents a Death Metal band from having Christian lyrics in their music.

God bless them in their time of trial. Remind them, Jesus loves them. Scripture says it rains on the bad and on the good, meaning both good and bad times come to those who have faith as well as people still trapped in sin. Physical death was introduced into the world by the sins of Adam and Eve (see Genesis). Originally, we were all meant to live forever here on earth. Before the fall, Adam walked and talked with God.
Remember, Jesus rose from death. Scripture says more than five hundred people saw Him walking and talking on the third day. Whoever has faith in Him will suffer physical death but rise again and have everlasting life.
Artists to consider: Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin, Tree6Three, David Crowder Band, CC Winans, Yolanda Adams, MaryMary, Darlene Zscech ('Zeck'), Amy Grant, Rebecca St. James.

All of the following are Christian music references:
Chris Rice - Come To Jesus (yes, it discusses life changes and crying out to Jesus)
Rhonda Funk (not well known yet but she published a CD). Go to RhondaFunk.org - She is a friend of mine. Her song "It's Your Strength That I Need" is amazing.
Come Home Running by Chris Tomlin
Remember Me by Mark Schultz
Held by Natalie Grant
Homesick by MercyMe
You Raise Me Up by Selah
Hope this helps. God Bless You.

Some of my favorite songs that I listen to when life is difficult are:
"Blessed be your name" by Tree 63
"Praise You in the Storm" by Casting Crowns
"How Great is Our God" by Chris Tomlin
When I listen to the words of these songs they really help me to keep my faith and to know that God is in control and has an almighty plan for whatever my circumstances.
Hope this helps.

If you like somewhat harder stuff, check out Seventh Day Slumber.
--Lyrics to their song "I know" --
It's hard to see beyond your pain
When you feel so dead inside
It's hard to see what you've been given
It's hard to find the hope in life
And I know it's hard to take what's happening
And I know life is tough sometimes
And I know it seems like there's no hope for you
And I know your life is worth more than you can see
And I say look at Jesus' hands
Those scars are there for you
You know He understands
What you're going through
....Good luck finding the songs you're searching for. :)
