If the car overheats then the thermostat is stuck shut. If the temperature gauge doesn't get to normal then it's stuck open. It's only a couple or three bolts to take out the thermostat and you can check its operation in a basin using a kettle full of boling water.

If the thermostat is stuck closed, your car will overheat very quickly. It is very dangerous to run the car like this for long, as it can damage your engine seriously. If it is stuck open, it will take a long time for the engine to warm up, and can cause problems with the heater as a result of that. You can only tell for certain if it is bad by removing it and examining it, but those are some symptoms to look for.

squeeze the upper radiator hose when the car is up to temp about 10 min. if the hose is thick and hard its your thermostat. you will also notice that the reservoir might have extra fluid in it by the lines on the bottle. if the hose is rigid make sure it is not a ridid hose by noticing if it has a wire in it. also the upper radiator hose has clamps as it connects to the thermostat housing held in place with a clamp. a bulging hose confirms the thermostat. i f that checks out fine your next option is looking for leaks under your car. antifreeze on floor its probably your water pump.
